ZRA Awards Spillway Rehabilitation Tender

17 September 2019

Filipe Carnall - GE Hydro France (Contractor) and  Munyaradzi Munodawafa - ZRA Chief Executive

On 24 May 2019, Eng. Munyaradzi Munodawafa, chief executive of the Zambezi River Authority, signed the contract for the rehabilitation of the Kariba Dam spillway, the second component of the Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project, with representatives of the successful tenderer, a consortium comprising GE Hydro France & Freyssinet International. The contract is valued at approximately $53,684,000.00.

Together with the plunge pool reshaping, the refurbishment of the spillway will ensure the long-term safe operation of the Kariba Dam for many years to come and the dam’s continued contribution to Zambia and Zimbabwe’s energy security and economic prosperity.

The contractor is expected to mobilise to site gradually over the next ten months from the beginning of August.  Refurbishing the sluice gates will take four years with the commissioning of the refurbished spillway expected to take place by the end of 2023.

The spillway refurbishment works will stimulate local businesses, given the influx of people into the area, and will generate a limited number of jobs for unskilled and semi-skilled workers.

Like the plunge pool works, the spillway works will not require the relocation of people  or adversely affect water levels in the reservoir and downstream of the plunge pool, or the flora and fauna in the dam area.

The loan and grant financing committed to the KDRP project by the World Bank and the African Development Bank are primarily funding the spillway rehabilitation works.
